You were working successfully as a film editor. What led to your directorial debut?
I have always been passionate about making films and, after a number of internships,
I ended up in the cutting room. Editing became my passion. At the same time, I was making my own films: short films, music videos, etc.
What was the spark that led to a feature film? Following my experience on short films, I dreamt of making a feature film. I was looking for a story with few characters. And I always wanted to make a film in the snow. The idea came to me over night, in a dream.
What is behind the story? All my films are about interpersonal relationships. In this film, it’s about the end of a love. What’s more the story encompasses many elements of a classic drama. During the development of the screenplay I read a lot of Greek mythology. The result is a mixture of both.
It’s quite unusual for a debut film to be a genre film ... Yes, I know. Before starting work on Blindspot, I edited a horror film for K5 Film and wanted to use some of the elements from horror films to confuse the viewers with some red herrings but ultimately to tell a love story. A very poetic film is the result.
What is your connection with K5? I’ve edited two films for K5. The last couple of years I’ve worked with many production companies and I knew that I had to go to Oliver Simon with this project because he actively supports this kind of film project. I’d like to particularly thank him for giving us the freedom we needed. What’s more he also offered me the services of Florian Puchert and Wolfgang Böhm, two extremely talented screenplay authors.
